Mr. Vitamin C…

Dr. Linus Pauling

I covered enigmatic Dr. Pauling on many occasions. Typical for the scientific fraternity, he always seemed to be wearing a tolerant smile when in the presence of mortals. A man who didn’t think he was superior– he knew it.

After gaining fame with Vitamin C, Pauling turned to politics. He picketed the White house in 1962 to protest nuclear testing. Wrote a best-selling book, “No More War.” One day he called a press conference to denounce the A-bomb. Seated next to him was Dorothy Healy, Los Angeles’ leading communist sworn to overthrow the United States Government by force if necessary.

Because of his scientific notoriety, people listened. He was out of his realm in international politics. I felt he was being used as a dupe. He is to be applauded, however, for his extraordinary research of Vitamin C, its healing properties, and his work with massive dosages of Vitamin C in Scotland where he shares a clinic in the fight against cancer.

  1. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Pauling when I worked in the Chemistry Department at Texas A&M University from 1983 to 1987. He came for one of the IUCCP (Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program) weeks.
